We've used this at least 3 times a day for almost 6 months. It is challenging, comfortable, and easy to spend just a few minutes to burn alot of calories, feel stronger. Little knocking on the front right side sometimes, not a big deal, especially since I usually watch tv when I use it.

This was a 2005 model and did not have the water bottle as indicated. Some parts were a little hard to identify by the instructions and could cause difficulty for those that do not like to assemble things. Lacked 2 washers but did not seem to need those-fit better without them. The computer cord assembly could easily be damaged when assembling, so be careful and slowly pull, etc. Surge protection will help to protect the electronics, which may build static in winter indoor workouts. The workout is great in the 2 months I have had this. It works smoothly to date and no problems with programs, etc.

I am very happy with the quietness of the machine and how well it still work after three years of almost everyday use. For me personally, and not my wife, I which that it had a higher resistance setting. I using it at the maximum setting and have added weights improve the resistance, but it still is not enough for my legs.

A friend and I both ordered one of these about 2 months ago. We use them every day. We are happy with the purchase. The elliptical is heavy - 170 lbs. but really pretty easy to move. Feels very solid. The console is easy to use, offers good variety. Backlit would be nice, but far from necessary. Overall it isn't noisy, but it is a little squeaky, and does have a slight knock on the right side. I don't know if any elliptical has the heart sensor in the long handles, but that would be more helpful than having to stop the upper body exercise. Also, I would like to see how many calories burned, etc. with and without using the long handles. So far, I think it's a great machine, and SO much better to have in the house, don't have to go anywhere to get a good work out.

I have moved this trainer across state lines twice and it still runs as good as the first day I bought it.

I like ellipitcals and this is just as good as ones found in a fitness center.

I have been using the Schwinn 418 daily. It is the only time I have not had hip pain as I have had with my treadmill. The stride of 18" is great for me at 5'1" and my husband at 6'1". I am up to 35 minutes a day and the workout is truly great and all over. I can't say enough good about the machine. My husband took his time and laid out all the parts first per the reviews I had read. This is great advice. He tightened things down well and I haven't had a squeak. Sturdy and functional. Truly gets your upper body and core also.

I felt the elliptical was the best exerciser for running, walking, and cardio workouts, as the programmable workout sets, by weight, age, exertion, allow one to achieve full dyanmics with a better joint treatment than working on a treadmill, where there are rampant impact stresses involved.

I had used an elliptical as part of an exercise room workout (paid to use), and found it one of the better overall systems in places where space is limited. besides presets, the Schwinn allows impromptu tweaks and adjustments. My principal focus was for cardio workouts subsequent to open heart surgery. If you only get one machine, this is the one to get.

assembly: not hard, but moderately bulky, and read the directions throughout the setup for best results. you may need some tools besides those supplied, as well as plenty of work room to setup the machine.

Portability: not exactly portable. best set up in the place where it will stay, as the setup is about 8 feet long by 2+ feet wide, and about 150 or so pounds. Helps to have a helper during delivery, moving, and setup.

sets: probably 8 preset programs, plus another dozen or so variations input by the user at any time of use. monitors heart rate.

user info: though made for an adult, can be used by any member of the family, from 5 years old, up.

cons: squeaks during use, and no easy way to lubricate friction parts. plastic joint shields no good for intended use (easy fatigue and breaks). Batteries (C) are tedious to change. Would prefer an a/c jack or something instead od batteries.

For the price, design, stability, this unit is well made and sturdy, as well as very reasonable priced. One of the ellipticals recommended by Consumer Reports, and other websites.

This machine is fantastic. I have used it a minimum of 60 minutes per day, 5 days per week every week for the several years I have owned it. On occassion it does get a squeaky noise that is easily remedied w/a wrench and 5 minutes but, otherwise, no other maintenance at all has been required. This sucker kicks butt and I LOVE IT!

Daily user and thirty minutes draws an admirable sweat and workout. Alkaline battery power is good for three to four of these workouts and that's it, so stick with AC transformer. Developed loose bearing on one of the arms after three years but does not affect performance. Fragile front wheels if accidentally dropped. Otherwise, a stable easily leveled platform. Real cheap compared to $1600 three years ago, so a killer value these days, especially when Schwinn warrantied the frame for ten years...

Schwinn 418 is solid and smooth. Wow! What a workout. You have to experiment with body position to find one most comfortable for you. The set up didn't take more than an hour. However, we used power tools versus the tools that came with the box. The elliptical has worked well thus far. It did begin to squeek during use about the second time I used it. But I've gotten use to the noise. It's not unbearable. I feel that I'm getting a good workout from this machine. I love having this workout machine in the privacy of my own home. I would certainly recommend this to others.

This is a great machine for the price. [...] Set up was not bad. I did it with teh help of my 6 year old son in 2.0 hrs. Experienced lot of squeeking noise in teh first few days. Used soem white lithiun grease at joints which reduced the noise to min. I feel it is smooth now except minor sqeaking once in a while. BTW, Schwinn confirmed teh water bottle is no longer included.Very easy to use and has tons of info on the LCD screen. Once while using at high speed, one of the rollers slipped. But put it back and have no problem. I haven't used much to write my experience in detail. It is a great bargain at [$]. I highly recommend to others.

I found my Schwinn 418 Eliptical machine to be very well Built. Very sturdy construction that easily withstands the impact demands for this machine. The product was very simple to put together. It is sturdy, easy to use and quiet. The upper body workout is somewhat uncomfortable because you must keep your arms so far from the trunk of your body. This is probably true of all elliptical trainers though. The heart rate monitor is not easy to use and I am not confident that I get a correct reading.

Wife and I use this product because of the low impact workout. It was relatively easy to setup as long as you follow the directions. It is not a 30 minute setup but it is not to bad to disassemble and put back together. The only compliant is that after about 6 months it started to get really noisy when using.

I use this machine as an alternative to bike riding when the weather or daylight does not allow for outdoor activities. I feel that it is well worth the money and quite effective as an alternative to moderate excersize or weight loss. The only real complaint I have is a squeak that comes and goes from the foot pad. It is obnoxious when it is squeaking but usually quiets down during excersize.

I can take the same low impact walks safely at home with the trainer and not worry about falling on my bad knee in winter.
It is very heavy, too heavy to move.

This unit is great...the cons are easily overlooked when you factor in the quality of the unit. it is a bit difficult to assemble and it immediately started squeaking. But a little WD-40 to the moving joints every two months or so, cures that problem. I would recommend tightening the unit every 4-6 months as well.

Believe me, this unit was well worth the money - better than the professional units at my local gym.

I did like the product but it had a few issues. The good points where: 1. price was good. 2. All parts worked properly. 3. Was a very good workout for cardio. The bad points: Made noises like the parts were not tight. I would go over the unit and look for screws to tighten but it never was completely quiet. If you don't mind a few squeaks you will be ok. Also, it was not very easy to assemble. Plus, the last "bad" would be the size of it and the fact that it doesn't fold for storage. It takes up quite a bit of space.

Trainer arrived with some parts missing. These arrived express courier in a couple of days. I had to get the thing to the third floor and the flywheel assembly must weigh 75 lbs. Also very awkward to carry.

After assembly (with confusing and inaccurate instructions) trainer worked fairly well but developed an annoying "clank" on the right side.

I received my Schwinn 418 elliptical trainer [...] all the contents are in good condition. It took me an hour to put it together because I wanted to make sure that I will not make any mistakes. I tried the product immediately after assembly and as expected it is very quiet and for the price it is well worth it. It is gym quality and very sturdy. My only comment is the grease that came with the product was already dry and I have to use WD 40 for a smoother operation. Set up in my garage 30 minutes 4-5 times a week. The model settings are comparable to more expensive machines, yet drawback is shorter stride than the Precor's II used at the Gym. Takes a little getting used to. However, once you overcome that it does great exercise on the leg muscles and heart rate.

I ordered this equipment based on overall reviews and price. The biggest disappointment was that this new-in-the-box equipment arrived with certain parts already rusted--kind of makes you wonder about the quality control at the manufacturer! However, the service on replacing these rusted parts was efficient and quick. It is true that it was fairly time-consuming to assemble, but that's what one can expect if you're not buying a pre-assembled item. It took about 2 hours to complete the assembly, but it does go togehter without too much trouble. Overall the quality of the equipment is pretty good, and I say this based on the fact that it is fairly noisy...creaky and squeaky, which has increased over months of usage. It seems a bit wobbly too, though it's still very comfortable and convenient to use. I searched the owner's manual for any instructions on maintenance--recommended lubrication, periodic tighening of fasteners, that sort of thing--but the manual has no such information. I guess I'll give such things a shot anyway, but have not done so yet. Overall, I'm pretty satisfied for the money spent. This equipment is great for the normal regular exercise use at home that most of us expect. I find it great to have when I leave work too late to make the gym, because I can alway do 30 - 45 minutes on this at home.

My husband finds it comfortable. His shoulders are wider and he can use the arm handles more easily than me. I find the foot pedals and handles too wide for using comfortably. The front stabilizer rubs. We were directed to apply silicone spray at the site. It worked for a short time but it continues to make a rubbing sound. I use a LifeFitness eliptical at the gym and find it more comfortable. Thanks for asking.

This machine was easy to put together. It worked well for the first couple of months. After about 4 months, it developed a loud bang every time the front wheel (at least that's what it seems like is in the case) turns one revolution. I exercise daily, and like variety. I ride a bike, walk/run, use an indoor rowing machine, and lift weights. The Schwinn eliptical trainer is gentle and effective as a source of aerobic training. Easily adjustable, and seems to accomodate stride lengths for me (6'3") and my wife and daughters (5'8"). It was inexpensive, and has been a good addition to our arsenal of fitness equipment in the home.

The elliptical trainer was judged best buy in Consumer Report and I would agree with their assessment. It was easy to set up and I was using it ten minutes after I assembled it. I use the Schwinn 5 days a week for one hour. I also read and pray during the hour which makes it go very quickly. Some computer head units are faulty. The problem I had if I paused the timer, it wouldn't restart at the same resistance. I had to play the the resistance control to get back to my setting. The great part was the guaranty (2 yrs). They promptly replaced the part.

This is one of the worst products I have ever purchased. Within a few weeks the console was inoperable. Therefore I had no electronic use of various resistance, heart rate, or time of use. They sent me a new console after I called support. That one too went bad. I ordered at my expense a new transformer which didn't fix the problem. From then on the support advisors required that I disassemble the unit and use a volt meter to determine voltage. I'm not an electrician so this was beyond my capability.

Now I have a large difficult to move object that I can use at the minimum resistance that comes from my own body weight and I have no electronic controls whatsoever.

My husband and I purchased this machine 3 years ago and have both used it consistently 3 to 4 times per week. We get a great low impact workout, and have not had any problems with it. It works as well today as the day we bought it. I used to use an elliptical machine in a commercial gym, and I really find this machine to be comparable to the machines in the gym.

I am very pleased with the Schwinn 418 Elliptical Trainer. I feel that it is a very good value for the money.

The trainer was easy to assemble. The assembly instructions were clear and easy to follow. I workout 4 times a week primarily for cardio-vascular fitness. I have been using the Trainer for 3 years now and my resting heart rate is still 58 beats per minute.

I used to run/jog on the public streets for 30 years until my ankles started to complain. My doctor told me to stop running. So I started to go to the gym to swim or use their machines. I found that this Trainer is as good quality as any I found at the big-name gym chain that I used to go do. A big plus with owning my own Trainer is not having to drive to the gym.

I have enjoyed this Schwinn Trainer so much that my wife has switched from her stationary bicycle to the Schwinn Trainer.

I live in the Nothern climates, so I swim in the summer and use this in the winter. It does a great job of working the upper and lower parts. I use 4-5 times per week in the winter, and it does not cause discomfort to my bad knees.

This is one of the most disappointing products I have ever purchased. Within a few weeks of purchase the console went dead. The company responded and sent a replacement on a timely basis. Within a few weeks it went out again. Then the agony began. I replaced the transformer at my expense to no avail.
Subsequent inquiries required that I have a volt meter and disassemble the unit to make voltage measurements. This is unacceptable. I now have a unit that works solely off my rotating the flywheel. I have no electronics.

In addition, it was difficult to assemble. The instructions had pictures that were inadequate to discern the differences in various washers, nuts etc. and but for the fact that I assembled many children's toys and have some mechanical ability I couldn't have done it. I don't envision a single mom doing it that's for sure. I paid a premium price bases upon Consumer Reports evaluation. What a hoax!

I am very satisfied with this product. I do, however find it a bit bulky (really don't know if it is bulkier than other similar machines). My only major criicism is that the allen screws tend to loosen up at various points on the machine especially the foot platforms. Until they are tightened there is a noise issue. It pays to keep an allen wrench nearby. Other than that I find it a powerful and reliable workout device and would recommend it highly.

My husband and I have been using the Schwin 418 almost daily since January! I love that it works for both of us even though we are almost a foot difference in height. We agree it's easier on the knees than running! We like that it is quieter than the treadmill and that the display is easy to read. The calorie count is off when checked against a Heart Rate Monitor (the elliptical shows almost double the actual calories burned) though. I would recommend it to any friend looking for something to use at home.

The eliptical is noisy and squeaks when in use which may be as a result of my having to set it up. I thought I tightened all screws/bolts very tight, but after using for a while it gets noisier. Thinking the screws are loosening up, I've tried to tightened them several times but they seem tight, so I don't know why the arms/peddle parts continue to squeak. This is annoying.
But, it does give a good workout.

Cons - 1 can not change screen contrast and it low light its hard to read, and 2 used it for 3 months and had to take it apart to oil connections (it was squeeking).

I talked my husband into buying this elliptical based on the reviews and price so I could excercise after the baby was born. He was a little skeptical at first. After it arrived and he set it up which according to him was the best packaged item and very easy to put together. He had nothing but good things to say which is very rare. I have been using mine for about 4 months now at least 3 times a week. I absalutely love it. It is very comfortable and easy to use and it is not that bulky. I've currently lost 45 LBs.

I make it a point to use it at least every-other-day. It is easy to get into using it. Seems to be the best at keeping the body loose and less stiff.
My only suggestion is that the computer could use a brighter image for ease of viewing.

Having an elliptical machine in the house makes it very convenient to exercise. There's no need to worry about weather, a gym membership or the gas prices driving to a gym or another location. You can even exercise in your PJs if you're so inclined. This machine is very quiet and has a lot of options for workouts from beginner to advanced. It feels solid enough to belong in a professional gym. The only true drawback is that it takes up a bit of room.

This is a great product for a cardiovascular workout in a short time. I have practiced karate for years and this is the best equipment for endurance I have ever used. I use this trainer for everyday workout. I own it for last 6 months, and am quite happy with it.

It's not a very quiet machine, makes some noise.
The console is easy-read, and can operate on battery.
The setup was time-consuming, although not very difficult. The instructions were clear.

My daily fitness goal is pretty modest: half-an-hour aerobic/cardio. This trainer gives me what I need, and for an affordable price. What else does one expect???
In short, it's a good value-for-money.

I have noticed some muscle toning, mild weight loss and increased conditioning, especially helpful during the winter! Pedaling in reverse is also very good training. It is very easy on the joints... One of the worst things about this product was getting it into my house and set up. We live in a second floor walkup and delivery only went to the garage. I had to open up the box and haul it up piece by piece. Then putting it together took a number of hours - the directions are terrible! However, once it was set up, it's a good piece of equipment. Some minor noise that is annoying, but otherwise, works smoothly and causes no discomfort during hour long workouts, unlike some of the cheaper ellipticals I've used.

I use the machine twice a week for cardio and strength training. I'm a 50-year-old woman and former gym rat with limited physical abilities now due to a health condition, and this keeps me looking good and feeling strong with a short workout two or three times a week.

The only problem is a squeak that developed in the right side of the machine that reappears even after lubricating with oil.

Other than that, this machine does its job for what we need.

My husband took 2.5 hrs to assemble the machine and he's mechanically inclined. So be prepared when yours arrives.

I've owned this wonderful machine for about 6 months now and use it 2-3 times a week, 15- 20 minutes a session. Firstly, I torture test every piece of equipment I own, .. cars, tools, sports equipment etc.... I play no favorites to anything or anyone, so to drop a few hundred on an exercise machine means that its got to LAST and handle a workload.
So here's my review;

I tested close to 40 different machines, Pre-C's, Nauts, Wall-Ms and been to more fitness stores than I care to admit too. What I was looking at was.. A. Price B. Durability and Reliabiltiy C. Construction D. Features E. Size

I read the reviews in Consumers Report and saw a TV show that featured this item and I went and actually test drove it at a fitness shop along with about 7 other machines at the same time ranging in price from $500 to $5000... you get what u pay for!!

A. Price- The price is amazing on this machine, none compares... since this hit the CR magazine, the price has continually dropped and is now affordable to everyone.

B.Durability- This is a HEAVY machine(around 170 lb or so), has a good sized footprint and feels as sturdy as it looks.

C: Construction- This machine comes packaged in the absolute BEST packing I have ever seen in my life. The carton is about 16" x 36' x 60" and the parts are completely enclosed inside of a styrofoam "cocoon", no scratches, dents or damage is possible unless you take an axe to the box. It took me about 2 hours to put together with basic tools and knowledge. The track is smooth and you glide on basically a 'roller blade" wheel which can easily be replaced after a few years. Parts are put together with hex wrenches and my ONLY complaint about duribility is how the arms are put together.... the arms are two piece approx 3 feet each piece and slide into each other and are joined by two small set screws....it seems you can just keep tightening these screws till they strip and not know it... and when using the machine... the joint feels somewhat "flimsy"... or am I imagining it?? (Why they didnt put two bolts thru the two pieces escapes me!) Otherwise each piece is machined accurately and joints are flush. brass bushings and good finish on all parts.

D. Features- The individual programs are great and easy to use... plus u can do a manual input to stream line your program as u wish. The screen is a standard " LCD grey".. reminiscent of 20 yr old calculators and some of the readouts are SMALL. This machine is NOT backlit , so, if you are using this in a dim lit area or just watching a TV , you will have a PROBLEM! You just cant read the screen in bad/low light...so.. go to a higher model of this Schwinn and you will get the Blue Backlite that (now i realize) is uncomparable! ... Heartrate monitor....the monitor is built into a set of "Ram's Horns" just in front of the display..the problem is..that when you grasp the handles, you're fingers cant fit in between the display the the handles.. if you have big hamhocks for hands.. forget it, no way you can sqeeze your hands in there... a Schwinn mistake that could be easily fixed by a minor slight angle on the weld...Im 6 foot, average build and I can just barely get my fingers in there to grasp the handles for the Heartrate Monitor... for an average female, I see no problem at all. So, when you are holding the rams horns to get your heartrate, the arms are swinging by your sides... problem is that if you have BROAD shoulders, the arms will probably hit your shoulders/arms while taking a heartrate. Minor inconvenience unless you are built like Hulk Hogan! Also, the Heartrate monitor is SLOW to get your HR... no, i mean VERY SLOW..probably 40 seconds to climb (yes it climbs from about 110 bpm) to your rate... Slow in my books compared to some of the higher end models. FAN- Nope, but again, go to a higher end machine and pay an extra few hundred, you'll get one. WATER BOTTLE holder--... placed a little too low on the front column for my liking. TOWEL/ACCESSORY HOLDER- none... it would be nice to have a small handle or container to hold a TV remote, towel, magazine etc...
E. Size- Again... this is HEAVY... I got on top of over 40 machines and "Rocked" them side to side, back and forth to see how they would handle me ( 6',210 lbs)...and this where this machine shines and stands out in the crowd... Five stars on this aspect. You feel superior when you're on this baby! Height... when on this machine, I peak out at about 7' 6" at peak height... so.. use in a basement room is questionable!

So, I've nit picked alot on here to show the minor things that are wrong with the machine, let me emphasize these are MINOR compared to how I would have crucified some of the other JUNK out there that are being sold as ellipical trainers. This model is a HANDS down WINNER for price, features and durability... read the reviews elsewhere and they are correct... THIS IS A WINNER! I intend to be riding this machine till Im 90 yrs old, and truthfully, I think it will be there right beside me! You will not be disappointed in purchasing this machine!

My husband and I are pleased with the low impact workout that we get. We like the machine but had many problems and after replacing it 3 times (because of rust problems) we seem to be ok now. I cannot say enough about how good the attention to the problems were. We're practically on a first name basis with the different repair people and Nautilus! Great service and they always addressed the problems right away. The latest problem was last week with the main mast "unwelding" itself, but it was quickly replaced. In a nut shell, we bought it Oct. 2007 and in late April 2008 we are still having repairs.....other then that...a great machine!
I would recommend this machine and it works beautifully once the problems are ironed out.

The eliptical is easy to use, and with all the different setting, I haven't lost intrest. Both my wife and I use it every day! We've both lost weight and more impotantly, we feel better and have more energy. We had a problem with a squeek, but the costomer service was great. They had a new part to us in two days, and there have been no problems since. The only real negative I have is, the screen is a little hard to read, but once you get use to it it's ok.

I use the elliptical trainer about 3 times per week. It's been a great piece of equipment. I've only had one fairly minor problem.

I was getting a loud squeak somewhere on the right foot bar, and had to take off a plastic cover, re-tighten a bolt, and spray with WD-40 to get it to stop. Every once in awhile there is still a squeak but not as bad as it's been.

My wife uses this more than me, and she has lost 50+ pounds in the last 6 months. It was difficult to setup (excpect 2+ hours). The squeeking noise can be silenced with some WD-40 every two months or so. Also, plan on tightening the bolts periodically as well. That said, the unit is solid and is smooth. I would definitely recommend this unit to anyone looking to spend $1000 or less.

I work out 4 times per week, 1 hour per secession. The unit makes a lot of noise (both the original and replacement). The side broke on the original; the serviceman came to repair the unit and broke additional parts. After the 2nd time he came to repair the unit it was deemed unfixable and was replaced under warranty. The 2nd unit initially worked fine but is now showing the same symtoms. I expect that it might break down very soon.

I use the product 3-5 times per week and it has quickly aged. I have had the product for less than a year and the runners that the wheels go back and forth on are already being eaten away at. This causes loud noise and the wheels to fly off the track quite often during the workout. If I used this more or my wife used it in addition to me, I don't think this particular unit would still be standing.

Screws were easily stripped during assembly. Creaky during operation. The main problem is that the resistance is highest on the lowest setting and vice versa. I wish that I would have bought a more expensive model that was more durable and reliable.

This is one of the best elliptical machines I have ever used! Sturdy, quiet and comfortable. I always feel like I have had a good workout but don't dread doing it on this machine. Although it is a sturdy machine with a smooth action, I never use it because it is by far the loudest piece of excercise equipment I've ever used. I know I put it together correctly. It was quiet for the first week and a half. Then it got insanely loud. I checked everything and tightened all the bolts. That helped it be quiet halfway through the next workout and then it was right back to making tons of noise. I purchased this particular machine because I didn't mind paying a little extra for what I thought was a better machine. Although it does have a few pros, I NEVER use this thing because of its excessive noise pollution. Even the ellipticals in the $300 range are quieter that this thing. Strongly advise not purchasing it! On the other hand, Bowflex is owned by the same parent company and I have nothing be great praises to sing about that piece of equipment!

I love this machine you will definitely get a good work out. I had a knee injury and it has strengthened my knees. Your arms will get toned and you will see results ten days after using the machine. The machine is kinda of big so you need to have space for it, but you won't be sorry you bought.
